Military academy applications available

The Alaska Military Youth Academy is accepting applications for its fall 2002 and spring 2003 Challenge Program sessions.

Each session begins with a five-and-a-half month residential school in which students live a military lifestyle while attending classes, participating in a demanding physical fitness program and learn healthy living habits, teamwork and leadership skills.

The program is followed by 12 to 14 months of after-care.

To be accepted, applicants must be volunteers, 16 to 18 years old, willing to commit to a drug, alcohol and tobacco-free life while enrolled.

Applicants also must be physically and mentally capable of successfully participating in a demanding program.

The Alaska Military Youth Academy is located at the Camp Carroll Training Site on Fort Richardson near Anchorage.

It is one of three state of Alaska-run secondary schools accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges and an Army JROTC site.

For admission information, call toll-free (800) 797-2267. Information and applications also may be requested by writing the AMYA Admissions and Records Section, P.O. Box 5727, Fort Richardson, AK 99505.
