Birch Ridge Golf Report: Senior tourney comes to Birch Ridge; another pro event in books

Posted: Thursday, July 15, 2010

With the Alaska Pro Skins Game behind us for this year it is now time to prepare for the Annual Grainge Memorial Senior Tournament. There will be five divisions including Men 50-59; Men 60-plus first flight, Men 60-plus second flight; Women 50-59 and Women 60-plus.

In 2009 at the seniors tournament, Linda Murphy won the Women's Master Flight and Tanna Chenault took the Women's Junior Flight. For the men, Al Fry won Men's 1st Flight Masters, Sid Cox Men's 2nd Flight Masters and Mike Chenault captured the Men's Junior Flight. You have until noon on Friday to get signed up. Contact the Birch Ridge pro shop for further details.

Monday was absolutely fantastic for a round of golf! The 14th Annual All Alaskan Pro Amateur had quite the turnout with some great scores being shot by the pros as well as the amateurs. As was reported in the Peninsula Clarion on Tuesday, B.K. Kaiser recorded the low round for the pros with a 66 with Eagleglen's Rob Nelson taking second with a 67. First-place low team score also was recorded by Nelson's team, which included Rob Nelson, Pat Bird, Roy Bird and Scott Sundberg. Low gross for the amateur went to Anchorage's Brittany Bomar with a 76 with Birch Ridge's Darrel Jelsma taking first place low net, shooting 67.

Brittany Bomar also picked up the women's long drive and had closest to the pin on hole 6/15, putting her shot within 40 inches of a tightly tucked pin placement. On 8/17, B.K. Kaiser was just over 6 feet away to capture honors there with the men's amateur long drive going to Jason Kaiser. Since there was no name on the long drive for the pros they graciously donated the funds to Junior Golf. Thank you Alaska golf pros for your generous donation!

Senior League on Tuesday had few golfers due to wet, wet weather. But everyone enjoyed the round. Gordon Briscoe won the round with a net 31, followed by Don McGhee. Darrel Jelsma continued his winning ways from the Pro Am on Monday with closest to the pin on the sixth hole and Chuck Rider had the longest putt on the ninth hole. No one made the green on the eighth hole so money will carry over to next Monday. Hope the weather improves!

Tuesday Morning Ladies League followed the seniors out on the course and had a good turnout for a cool, wet day. The first-place low team gross score went to Sally Hoagland, Leona Jackson and Beth Roseberry. Second place went to the foursome of Chiya Bazan, Tanya Boedeker, Elaine Anderson and Louise Schadle. Leona and Sally tied for the fewest putts. Leona also picked up a birdie on the eighth hole and Sally had a chip-in on the sixth hole. Sounds like the weather didn't hurt anyone's golf game!

At Tuesday Couples Night, 16 couples engaged in a Box-In Four Person Net Scramble. Each hole would have one of the team's score boxed in. For that hole you would take the boxed hole plus the overall low net for the hole to determine the team score for the hole. The team of Sally and Steve Tachick along with Linda and Dan Murphy played the courses and the boxes to perfection, capturing first place.

Sally and Del Hoagland with Myrna and Pat Cowan were in second with Sue and George Stein teaming with Val Ischi and Spencer Tachick to secure third place. Thank you to Teri and Gene Diamond for the time, enthusiasm, passion and energy they put into organizing Tuesday Night Couples! Your efforts are very much appreciated!

Alaska Golf Trivia -- PGA coach Butch Harmon won the Alaska State Amateur in the 1960s while stationed in Alaska.

Erin's Tip of the Week, compliments of Erin Bell, PGA Assistant Pro, Big Spring Golf Course:

"God gives talent; work transforms talent into genius." -- Anna Pavlova

Chipping Basics:

* Set up with the ball off the back toe, hands forward and weight concentrated on the foot closest to the target -- you will want a narrow stance and to choke down on the grip.

* Make a motion similar to a putting stroke and make sure to accelerate through the shot.
