Another tough one

Oilers lose by one run, fall to 1-5 on road trip

Posted: Monday, July 16, 2001

The good news is the Peninsula Oilers have outscored the opposition 19-15 six games into their current nine-game Alaska Baseball League road trip.

The bad news is that the Oilers, after a 3-2 loss to the Mat-Su Miners Sunday at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer, are now 1-5 on that same road trip. All five losses have come by one run, and two have come in extra innings.

The Oilers are now 9-14 in the ABL, seven games behind the league-leading Anchorage Glacier Pilots.

Cordell Perkins joined a lengthening line of hard-luck losers for Peninsula Sunday, going seven innings and yielding three runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits.

Meanwhile, the Oilers continued to boom or bust at the plate, as Mat-Su pitchers held them to eight base hits. In the five losses on the road trip, Peninsula has scored just seven runs. But in their one victory, the Oilers paraded across the plate 12 times.

Peninsula went into the sixth inning of Sunday's game trailing 1-0, but looked ready to take a large lead in the frame.

After Will Bolt started the inning by popping out, Mark Teahen, Wilton Reynolds and Luke Simmons all singled to load the bases. Jamie D'Antona then walked to score Teahen, tie the game and keep the bases juiced.

However, the Oilers failed to come up with a clutch hit as Justin Seely hit a sacrifice fly to put his team up 2-1, then Matt Cunningham grounded out.

Not adding to the cushion would cost the Oilers later as the Miners came back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, then score the winning run in the seventh.

Peninsula will look to turn the road trip around today when they face the Glacier Pilots in Anchorage at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on 1140 KSLD.
