The Kenai Writer's Group and Alaska Poetry League of Anchorage will sponser a Poetry Slam again this year. Last year's Kenai Slam was received with such success that the Poetry League's competetive Slam team is eager to return and perform on the Peninsula.
The 'Just for fun' Slam will be Saturday, July 27, at the Kenai Elk's Club. Poets sign in at 6 p.m. and the action starts at 7 p.m. Admittance is $7.00 for the performance plus $5 if you would like hors d'oeuvres, catered by Lori Chase of The Chase is On. An open bar will be available. Registered competitors pay only for food and bar.
All Slam poets on the Peninsula are invited to attend. Come prepared with three poems, each no longer than 3 minutes. Registration begins at 6 p.m. but only 12 participants can compete. A cash prize will be awarded to the first three places. The Team will not compete, but will perform some of their winning poems. The Team is preparing for the National Poetry Slam Competition in Minneapolis in August.
On July 19, the Writers' Group is sponsoring an open mike at Buster's in Kenai. It is open to anyone with any material, but is a perfect venue to practice for the Slam. It will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Advance tickets for the Poetry Slam are available at The Kenai Visitor's Center, River City Books and The Kenai Library. Tickets will also be sold at the door. For more information, contact Virginia Walters at 283-7305.
