Lady Kings play at state

The Lady Kings competitive softball team, a 14-and-under girls team, split a pair of games at the double elimination Alaska 2006 Amateur Softball Association State Tournament on Saturday in Fairbanks.

In the first game, the Lady Kings defeated the Fairbanks Northstars 9-8. Savannah Griffel pitched six innings and gave up eight runs on three hits while striking out four. Griffel also was 3-for-3 with a run, a double and an RBI. Also for the Kings, Sam Hull was 2-for-3 with two runs and a triple, which led to the game-winning run, while Lieren Flanagan was 1-for-3 with three runs and a triple. Flanagan got a game MVP award.

The Kings then lost 10-2 to the Alaska Avalanche. Griffel pitched an inning and gave up two runs and a hit, while Alysha Shaginoff pitched four innings and gave up eight runs on three hits while striking out two.

Flanagan was 1-for-3 while Hull was 1-for-2 with a run scored and got a game MVP award. Sam Little had the Kings’ other run.

The Kings continue play today and can do no worse than third place.
