Bucs snap Oilers' streak

Posted: Friday, July 16, 2010

The Peninsula Oilers lost to the Anchorage Bucs 8-0 on Thursday at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Oilers, 21-12 in the Alaska Baseball League, and pushed them 2 1-2 games behind the league-leading Mat-Su Miners. The Miners defeated Athletes in Action on Thursday to improve to 21-7 with their ninth straight victory. The Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks are in second place at 21-9 after losing to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Thursday.

The number two had a lot to do with the Oilers' loss. For starters, the Oilers were only able to manage two hits against Bucs pitching. Aaron Griffin gave up those two hits in seven innings of work to get the win. Ty Griffith and Fielding Pittman each pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

Oilers pitchers were tormented by doubles and two-out hits. The Bucs had 10 hits, five of which were doubles. They also scored every one of their runs after two were out in the inning.

Jake Sabol took the loss for the Oilers, giving up five runs on six hits in five innings of work. One of the runs Sabol yielded was unearned -- one of three unearned runs the Oilers gave up on the evening.

The Bucs jumped out front in the bottom of the second as both Justin Hopper and Zach Vincej had two-out, two-RBI doubles. Hopper would finish 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Vincej was 2-for-5.

In the fifth, the Bucs increased the lead to 5-0 against Sabol by scoring on a two-out error. In the sixth, Oilers reliever Adam Heredia gave up a run on a two-out single by Ryan Pineda. Finally, Dominic Piazza and Hopper had two-out singles to tag Stephen Piscotty with a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning.

The Oilers stay in Anchorage to face the Glacier Pilots tonight at 7 p.m.
