Kenai Peninsula Football Officials meeting June 23

A general membership meeting for the Kenai Peninsula Football Officials Association is scheduled for June 23 at 6 p.m. at Big G Electric on Kalifornsky Beach Road in Soldotna. Anyone interested in officiating football at both the high school and Pop Warner levels should attend.

A clinic for coaches and officials, followed by a barbecue, will take place on July 29 starting at 3 p.m. at Skyview High School. This meeting is mandatory for all first-year officials wanting to work varsity games.

Tagged fish nets $1,000 in halibut derby

Lloyd Gailey of Eagle River landed a tagged halibut Saturday, earning himself the $1,000 prize for landing the fish in the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby. Gailey caught the fish while angling from a private boat named The Edge. On Thursday, Ronald Campbell of Anchorage landed a tagged fish worth $500 while fishing with Rainbow Tours on the Jackpot.

Thomas Barkman of Anchorage still has the biggest fish for the month of July at 322.8 pounds and is the overall derby leader. Dave Lorenzi of Springfield, Va., is in second place for the month of July with the 245.2-pound fish landed Friday. Lucinda Lefever of Anchorage hauled up a 244.2-pounder Saturday to move into third place, and Kenneth Powell of George West, Texas, is in fourth place with a 239.6-pound fish caught Friday. Fifth place for July belongs to Robert Bryant of Vallejo, Calif., who landed a 196.2-pound fish July 10.
