ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Sharon Gagnon of Anchorage has been elected president of the Harvard University Board of Overseers, the panel that directs the nation's oldest university.

Gagnon, who holds master's and doctorate degrees from Harvard, has been an overseer since 1995.

Her year as president comes during the last of her six-year term on the board, according to the Harvard University Gazette.

Among other issues in the coming year, Harvard will conduct a search for a successor to university president Neil Rudenstine.

Gagnon is a former president of the University of Alaska Board of Regents, and is now a director of the University of Alaska Foundation, Rasmuson Foundation and CIRI Foundation.
