Skagway moving toward borough status

Posted: Tuesday, July 18, 2000

JUNEAU (AP) -- Skagway is moving toward forming a borough government.

Skagway Mayor John Mielke said Monday that organizers were collecting the necessary petition signatures to place the question on this fall's ballot. A draft petition has been submitted to the Local Boundary Commission for review.

The question will be presented to local voters if it passes muster with the commission, Mielke said.

City Manager Bob Ward said the move is aimed at forestalling the state's Model Borough Boundaries Act which would place Skagway in the Haines Borough.
