River search finds Fort Yukon man's body

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Searchers have recovered the body of a missing Fort Yukon boater.

That came Sunday night, or more than three weeks after they began combing the Yukon River between Circle and Fort Yukon.

The remains of Gordon Peterson, 48, were found 17 miles up river from Fort Yukon, the Alaska State Troopers said.

Peterson's body was discovered about three miles from where the boat carrying him and his wife ran aground June 22 while on a trip home from Circle.

Nancy Peterson was picked up by a passing boat a quarter of a mile downstream from where the boat ran aground. She told troopers she was asleep at the time of the accident.

Troopers were blaming a steering bolt that vibrated loose while the pair was boating that morning. The skiff went out of control, throwing the couple out, troopers said.

Neither was wearing a personal floatation device, troopers said.
