Dedicated volunteers make Kenai Poetry Slam successful

The Kenai Poetry Slam held on Friday at the Old Town Village Restaurant was a wonderful success. The sold-out event was great fun and hopefully will become an annual event in Kenai. Every successful event is the result of hard work from a dedicated group of volunteers, and this was no exception.

A million thanks to the members of the Kenai Library Book Club (Janice Chumley, Joy Morgan, Debra Nyquist, Joan Bennett-Schrader, Ralph Vandusseldorp and Miriam Woodin); Heidi, Max and Sue Biggs; Carol Ford; Cindy Galic; Siri Larson; Leroy Legg; Rick Mack; Kira Matiya; Anders and April Nyquist; Brad Nyquist; Peter Porco; Joe Rizzo; Virginia Walters; Kacky Wells; and Kelly Electric.

The following corporate and individual sponsors donated the prize money, paint and painting materials for the set and paid for the printing of posters and tickets: Alan and Georgia Poynor, Columbia Paint and Decorating, Jerry McDonnell, Michael and Kathleen Tarr, Morgan Steel Inc., Robert and Julie Niederhauser, Spenard Builders Supply and Whitewater Expeditions of Alaska.

Thank you one and all!

Golf tourney raises funds

for peninsula's Red Cross

I would like to take the time to thank all of the people who helped the Kenai Peninsula branch of the American Red Cross raise money through its annual golf tournament.

We were able to make $14,000 on our 10th Annual Golf Tournament, even in light of the fact that there were several other fund-raisers going on that particular weekend. As a result of the money raised, residents can expect the local Red Cross to provide disaster preparedness education and prompt relief to families affected by disaster on the Kenai. Thanks!

I would like to share my appreciation to the businesses, companies and individuals who reached down and found the money to make this fund-raiser a success. Many local businesses contributed food, great prizes to raffle or auction, or purchased sponsorships creating a successful golf tournament, which was a fun, yet challenging competition.

An especially big "thank you" goes out to Pat Cowan of the Birch Ridge Golf Course and my hard-working tournament committee members and helpers: Jan Sloan, Grace Merkes, Gary Dawkins, Debbie Bagley, Kay Steele, Marti Radvansky, Dale Bagley, Bonnie Hansen, Lisa Dehlbom, Mary Brodigan and Carrol Martin.

There are many others that led to our good success. Of paramount importance were the 56 golfers who golfed with gusto. Thank you all, and I hope you can support the American Red Cross again for next year's tourney!
