GOODNEWS BAY (AP) -- A little girl in the Southwest Alaska village of Goodnews Bay drowned Wednesday night while swimming with friends at the mouth of the Goodnews River.
Hilary Fox, 8, was swimming with two other children shortly before 7 p.m. when she went under the water and didn't come back up, Alaska State Troopers said. Her companions walked a mile back to the village and reported the girl missing.
The village public safety officer immediately organized a search of the river as the tide was going out. Fox was found about an hour after she was reported missing. Rescue workers tried, without success, to revive her.
Her body was flown to Bethel and was being transported to the state Medical Examiner's office in Anchorage.
