Shaner, Turman win 5K; Kopp, Cox command 10-mile event at Unity Run

Posted: Sunday, July 18, 2010

In her first year living on the Kenai Peninsula, Denee Shaner is becoming well-known in the running community. Shaner continued her dominance in the summer racing circuit by winning Saturday's Rotary Unity Run five-kilometer race with a time of 17 minutes, 55 seconds. Shaner also recently won the Run for the River 10-mile race and the Homer News Spit Run.

Denee Shaner nears the finish line at Soldotna High School during the Unity Run's five-kilometer race Saturday. Shaner won with a time of 17:55. Jake Turman won the men's race with a time of 16:23.

An Achilles tendon injury forced Shaner to stop three times along the trail, which started at the Glacier Pontiac dealership and finished at Soldotna High School, but she still came in nearly 24 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Christina Turman. Seward graduate Denali Foldager took third.

"I was nervous today," Shaner said. "All the girls kept saying they were college cross country runners."

Having moved to Alaska from California, Saturday's light rain and cool temperatures worked against Shaner.

"It's too cold for me," she said. "In the beginning, I was so tight."

Shaner ran the 400- and 800-meter dashes in college. Training for longer races has been an adjustment, she said.

"I just started running longer, longer and longer," Shaner said.

Despite her injury, Shaner was pleased with the race.

"It was a good race," she said. "I was happy."

Jake Turman won the men's five-kilometer race with a time of 16:23. Lars Arneson came in just under 11 seconds later followed by Ty Shields in third.

With such a fast course, the race was over before he knew it, Turman said.

Turman said he caught two runners ahead of him by the first mile and hung on for the win. Turman, an assistant cross country coach at Northern Michigan University, said he wasn't training for a race, but rather to keep up with the women's team.

Turman said he wasn't expecting to win, but got the chance and went for it.

"If I had the opportunity, I was gonna go for it," he said. "It turned out well."

Just moments prior to the race, Holly Kopp decided to run the 10-mile event instead of the five kilometer. Good move. Kopp claimed first place with a time of 1:05:31, more than 5:30 faster than second-place finisher Satorene Jackson. Jenny Neyman placed third. The race followed the Unity Trail beginning at Kenai Central High School and ending at SoHi.

Kopp said she tried to keep pace with the leaders in the men's race.

"I was just trying to keep my eye on them," she said.

Kopp, who is heading into her sophomore year at The Masters College in California where she runs track and cross country, said she wasn't aware she was winning until her mom informed her of that with about two miles remaining.

"I was not really planning to push hard," Kopp said.

But once her mom told her she was in the lead, Kopp said she picked up her pace. She finished fourth out of all 10-mile racers.

Ryan Cox blazed to victory in the men's 10-mile race with a time of 53:02. Andrew Shields took second and Mark Blanning finished third.

"I took off in the lead," he said. "After a while I looked back and there was no one, so I just had to push myself."

Cox, who runs for Liberty University in Virginia, came in five minutes ahead of Shields. Though the course was predominantly flat, the final two inclines were felt by Cox.

"One made me hurt, but the next one was nothing compared to that," he said.

Cox is no stranger to the Unity Run, having raced in the five-kilometer event several times.

"It's like second nature to me," he said.

In his first year running the 10-miler, Cox said it tested his stamina.

"You just have to have endurance to be able to hold a quick pace for that long," he said.
