FAIRBANKS (AP) -- A Minto man died of head injuries after he was found unconscious in downtown Fairbanks early Saturday morning.

Lije Charlie Jr., 37, died at Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage Sunday evening from head injuries, said Fairbanks Police Detective Aaron Ring.

Ring said the initial call was for a ''heavily intoxicated'' person lying on a sidewalk downtown around 1:15 a.m. Saturday.

Charlie was transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

''They found a skull fracture and heavy internal bleeding'' in his head, said Ring. He said Charlie had a blood alcohol content level of .40, four times the legal limit.

Ring said Charlie's injuries could have come from either a fall on the sidewalk or someone hitting him on the head.

''Obviously anytime there's a blunt trauma to the head we have to investigate,'' said Ring, but there was no indication of foul play.

Ring said Charlie was found without any identification or wallet, but he had money stuffed in his shoe. He had just returned from fighting fires for the federal Bureau of Land Management.
