Families square off on tees

Posted: Thursday, July 19, 2001

The sun was shining brightly and it was a beautiful day for those family members playing in the Family Affair Tournament on Saturday.

Tied with a net score of 60, a playoff was necessary between the Dan Murphy-Curtis Nelson team and the Myrna Cowan-Zach Cowan team. Using the same format as the tournament, playing the eighth hole in a scramble format, the father-in-law/son-in law team of Murphy and Nelson prevailed over the grandmother/grandson Cowan team.

Third place, with a 63, was the mother/son team of Lisa Parker and Nick Horn. The Parker-Horn team and the Pat Cowan-JD Cowan team recorded low gross scores for the day at 77.

Complete results of the tournament follow this column.

Senior Golf

In spite of questionable skies, we had a respectable 10 hardy contestants show up for our Monday morning showdown.

Again, low net was the contest on the back nine, with Richard Atuk and Jerry Norris both carding a most respectable 36, which they split. Again, Chuck Rider pulled his trusty 170-yard club out to take closest-to-the-pin honors on the 15th hole.

Both closest to the pin on the 17th hole and longest putt on the 16th hole had no takers and were held over until next Monday. Now it is anyone's chance to take either or both of these honors next Monday. Let's get more "Masters" out there and give some of these folks a little competition!

Sign-in time has not changed. Check in at 8:30 a.m. and tee off shortly thereafter. We hope to see a great turnout next Monday as the greens and fairways are getting in good shape, thanks to our most capable greenskeepers' loving care and Mother Nature's welcome assistance.

Hope to see you all next Monday!

Junior Golf

The junior golfers from Birch Ridge came home with the Junior Ryder Cup Trophy after a summer competition with the Kenai Golf Course junior golfers. The golfers competed in match play at both courses in an event that will carry forward to future matches.

Thanks to Bill Engberg for coming up with the event and coaching the Kenai golfers and Tom Walsh for coaching the Birch Ridge golfers. Members of the Birch Ridge team were Keaton Andrus, Tony Azzara, Zach Cowan, Nick Horn, Brennan Jackson, Taylor Jackson and Josh Lansing.

The first two-day junior golf tournament was held at Eagleglen Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday. These tournaments are used to rank junior golfers nationally on the junior golf scoreboard. It is also a tuneup for the Junior State Amateur Tournament to be held next week at Anchorage Golf Course.

In the division for boys ages 10 to 12, Taylor Jackson placed second. Brother Brenan Jackson placed third in the division for boys ages 13 to 14. Also competing in the boys 13 to 14 division was Josh Lansing and Zach Cowan.

In the division for boys 15 to 17, Tony Azzara, Nick Horn, and Matt Matarrese placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. A complete list of scores can be found at

Another event held at Eagleglen was the latest edition of the pro-am competition being held at different courses. Tom Walsh shot 68 to finish tied for third and his amateur team of Phil Turkington, John Lansing, Nolan Rose and Pat Cowan finished in fifth.

Men's Night

Twenty golfers showed up on a cool evening and the scores were cool compared to other nights. The winning team of Paul Zimmerman, George Stein, Mike Hollingsworth and Richard Atuk shot 3-under-par. John Tongen put his tee shot on the eighth hole within 8 feet, 6 inches of the cup and Gary Stackhouse was 8 feet, 1 inches from the cup on No. 8. Nick Horn drove to within 65 yards of the green on No. 2 to take the long drive.

28th Annual Peninsula Amateur Golf Championship

This weekend is the 28th annual edition of the Peninsula Amateur Championship. Flights are determined by handicap for this three-day event. Golfers play their first round either Thursday or Friday with someone else playing in the tournament. The next two days, golfers play within their flight as determined by their USGA handicap.
