Due to diminishing Tanner crab numbers in Kachemak Bay, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has issued an emergency order reducing the daily bag limit from 20 crabs to 5. No more than two pots may be fished per angler, and no more than two pots are allowed per boat.
According to the department, the Tanner crab population in Kachemak Bay has been below the minimum stock size of 500,000 crabs since 1993. Commercial Tanner crab fishing has been banned in the southern district, including the bay, since 1995. Additionally, recreational crab harvests have increased annually, necessitating the emergency order. For more information, call the Alaska Department of Fish and Game at (907) 267-2218.
