Oilers fall to Glacier Pilots

Posted: Thursday, July 19, 2007

Seeking their seventh straight victory and sixth in a row on the road, the Peninsula Oilers squandered a plethora of opportunities in falling to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots, 2-0, Wednesday night at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The loss drops the Oilers to 21-12 overall and 13-12 in Alaska Baseball League action.

Glacier Pilots' starter Ben Soignier baffled Oilers' batters most of the evening, allowing only six hits over seven solid innings while striking out five and walking only one.

On the other side, Peninsula starter Matt Thomson turned in another strong outing himself.

He scattered only one run on four hits while also fanning five and walking one.

But it was the Oilers' inability to capitalize on timely hitting that eventually did them in.

They opened the game with two on and one out after David Genoa singled and Nick Buss walked, but Jeremiah Mejia subsequently struck out and Juan Martinez flew out to end the inning.

They wasted a leadoff double by Adam Younger in the second when Robert Lundy grounded out, Steve Goins fanned and Toby Davis flew out.

Mejia then began the fourth inning with single and Martinez followed with a double, putting runners at second and third with no outs.

But once again, the Oilers were unable to score as Younger struck out, Lundy reached on a fielder's choice that resulted in Mejia being tagged out and Lundy was then picked off to quell the threat.

Meanwhile, the Glacier Pilots took a 1-0 lead in their half of the fourth when Matt Wagner and Danny Cox hit consecutive singles, Mike Murphy walked and Luke Yoder beat out a fielder's choice, scoring Wagner from third.

They tacked on another run in the seventh off reliever Matt Wade (2/3 innings, three hits, one run) when Soignier singled, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. He came home on an RBI single by Aaron Barrows.

Oilers' reliever Joey Haug relieved Wade with two outs in the seventh and needed only one pitch to retire Mike Diaz on a pop out.

He then added a hitless eighth inning, leaving the Oilers in the game.

But they weren't able to get much done against Pilots' reliever Michael Alldredge, who allowed two hits by struck out four.
