Posted: Monday, July 19, 2010

The Peninsula Oilers defeated the Mat-Su Miners 7-2 on Sunday at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage in Alaska Baseball League play to snap the first-place Miners' winning streak at 11.

The victory is the eighth in nine games for the Oilers and also let the club finish up the ABL/MLB Scout Showcase undefeated.

The Oilers improve to 24-12 in the league and move into a second-place tie with the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks, who were 22-10 pending a late Sunday game against the Anchorage Bucs.

The Oilers are 1 1-2 games behind the Miners, who are 23-8.

After completing a 3-1 road trip, the Oilers return to Coral Seymour Park for a five-game homestand -- the final home games of the season. The homestand starts with games against the Bucs tonight and Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Geoff Broussard came through with a big start on Sunday for the Oilers. The Miners jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first when Bret Schwartz was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a single by Nick DeBiasse.

That would be the extent of the damage against Broussard. He pitched five innings and gave up one earned run on four hits while striking out two.

The Oilers tied the game in the top of the third with the first of two earned runs they would score off Miners starter and loser Joe Bircher.

Joe Kohan started the inning by reaching on an error. He would eventually score on a single by Ryan Gebhart.

In the top of the fifth, the Oilers took the lead for good when Sean Madigan started the inning with a double, stole third and scored on an error.

In the top of the sixth, the Oilers put some cushioning in their lead by pounding Miners reliever Eric Gage. Ryan Hege, who was 2-for-5, and Garrett Wittels, who was 3-for-4, started the inning with singles. Patrick Wisdom and Jeff Popick then both were hit by pitches to force in Hege.

Nathan Theunissen then came through with a double to score Wittels and Wisdom. Tyler Grimes completed the offensive burst with a sacrifice fly to put the Oilers up 6-1.

The Oilers tallied their final run in the top of the ninth, when Hege touched up Miners reliever Jason Trivett for a home run.

Meanwhile, Oilers manager Dennis Machado was throwing tough reliever after tough reliever at the Miners. Taylor Garrison pitched a hitless inning, Josh Corrales pitched a hitless inning, and Chad Smith gave up a single hit in an inning of work.

The Miners did get to Jorge Marban for a run in the ninth, but Marban struck out the side to end the game.
