ADAK (AP) -- A Seattle seafood company has bought into a fledgling processing company on Adak Island and has formed a new company to operate it.
NorQuest Seafoods Inc. said Wednesday it has acquired ''certain assets'' of Adak Seafoods and will operate the plant under the name NorQuest-Adak Inc. The purchase price was not disclosed.
NorQuest's John Garner will head the new company with Adak's Kjetil Solberg and Irgen Iversen staying on as managers.
The Aleut Corp., a Native corporation, controls the former Navy base at Adak and leased facilities to Adak Seafoods in the fall of 1998.
The Aleut Corp. hopes to transform Adak into a fishing community.
The plant processes cod, halibut, crab and other seafood.
Adak is 1,200 miles southwest of Anchorage.
