Sun illuminates Carter Lake in the Kenai Mountains and attempts to clear the surrounding terrain of snow earlier this month. A round-trip hike to the lake, which also offers rainbow trout fishing, is about three miles. Excellent grayling fishing can be had another mile and a half up the trail at Crescent Lake.
Hikers can expect to gain 1,050 feet going in and 100 feet going out. Wildflowers abound in the meadows along the trail. To reach the Carter Lake Trail, drive to Mile 33.1 of the Seward Highway and look for the parking area on the west side of the highway.
