ANCHORAGE (AP) Fire crews will conduct a long-planned prescribed burn in the Alphabet Hills northwest of Glennallen over the weekend, if conditions allow.
The burn, 56 miles from Glennallen, is planned for Saturday and Sunday by the Bureau of Land Management and the Alaska Fire Service. The goal of the burn is to improve wildlife habitat in the area, officials said.
The burn is expected to range in size from 28,000 acres to 39,200 acres.
The burn has been planned since 1985. A prescribed fire was attempted in 1982 but ultimately failed because of cool conditions, officials said.
