Landscaping contests continue

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Beautiful Business and Yard of the Week contests. Each week through Aug. 6, the beautification committee will choose a Soldotna business and residence to highlight. The winners will display a sign. In addition, winners will be announced at the weekly Soldotna chamber luncheon. Winning businesses receive $25 gift certificates from Kenai River Nursery. To nominate a business or individual, call, e-mail or fax the nominee's name, phone number and location to the chamber at 262-9814.

Neighborhood Watch meeting today

The Woodland Neighborhood Watch will meet at 6:30 p.m. today at the Sears Elementary School library. The topic will be a neighborhood cleanup planned for Aug. 14. For more information, call Lisa at 283-3478 or visit www.woodland watch.com.

Summer bazaar, barbecue planned

The Soldotna Senior Citizens Center will hold a summer bazaar from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the center. Crafts, a bake sale and a quilt display are planned. There will be a festive lunch menu planned.

The center's Progress Days endowment fund barbecue will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chili and other menu items will be available. For more information, call 262-2322.

Swimming lessons offered

The Kenai High School swimming pool's summer hours are as follows: Lap swim is from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. Mondays through Fridays; a swim workout is from 8 to 9 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; swimming lessons are from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily; open swim is from 1 to 2:45 p.m. daily; and private swimming lessons or pool rentals are available from 3 to 4 p.m.

The cost for lap or open swim time is $3, or $25 for a punch card good for 10 sessions. Group swimming lesson sessions will be offered Monday through Aug. 6. Daily lessons are 40 minutes. The cost is $40 per session. Private lessons are $10 per hour.

Blood donations needed

The Blood Bank of Alaska is seeking blood donations. Community members who make a donation now through Friday will be eligible to win prizes from area businesses. For more information, call 260-5672.

Safe Sitter course offered

The Boys and Girls Club in Kenai will hold a Safe Sitter class Aug. 9 through 13. Class topics cover basic child care and safety, as well as ways to entertain child safely. Participants must between the ages of 11 and 13 and current summer members of the club. Summer membership is $125 per month per child. The Safe Sitter class is an additional $50.

WRCC fund-raiser slated

The 20th annual WRCC-KSRM Radiothon will be held Sept. 13. Volunteers are being sought to work remote teams and help organize the event. It is the only major fund-raiser held for Women's Resource and Crisis Center. For more information or to volunteer, call June at 283-9479.
