Russian River hike slated

The Kenai Watershed Forum will host a free Russian River falls and weir hike from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Participants are asked to meet at the upper trailhead, wear study shoes, bring a lunch and rain gear. Fishery biologist Patti Berkhahn will lead the hike.To register, call 260-5449.

Senior bake sale, bazaar fundraiser set

The Soldotna Senior Citizens Center will host its annual summer bazaar, bake sale and quilt show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the center at 197 Park Avenue.

It will also hold an endowment trust fund barbecue from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chili, grilled salmon, cold drinks, live entertainment and a how to spin wool presentation are some of the planned activities.

Progress Days gearing up

Applications for the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce’s annual Progress Days parade are available online at www.soldotnachamber.com and by visiting the chamber office. The parade will take place Saturday.

Vendor space also is available for the Progress Days festival, which runs Saturday and Sunday in Soldotna Creek Park. For more information, call 262-9811.

Kasilof parenting classes offered

Parents are invited to learn to connect with children and teens by using practical tools for discipline, love and relational issues from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 27 at Tustumena Elementary School in Kasilof. For more information, call 262-7512.

Community run organizer sought

The Kenai Peninsula State Fair is seeking a coordinator for its River to River Run planned for Aug. 20. To volunteer in coordinating or assisting with the event, call 567-3670.

Safe Sitter courses offered

The Central Peninsula General Hospital will hold a Safe Sitter course from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 3 and 4 at the hospital. Children must be 11 years old at the time of class and must preregister. The cost is $50 per student and includes materials. For more information, call 714-4775.

Self-defense class offered

A self-defense class for women titled “Rape Aggression Defense (RAD)” will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 9, 10, 11 and from 9 a.m. to noon and 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Aspen Hotel in Soldotna.

The course will be taught by Brigham Young University campus police officers. Head instructor is Randy O’Harra. Women ages 14 and over may attend. The cost is $40 (proceeds after base costs will be donated.) Preregistration is suggested. Class size is limited to 50. For more information, call 283-0858.
