Progress Days 2000 Schedule of Events

Friday, July 21

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Arts and crafts bazaar, quilt show, antique display and bake sale. Soldotna Senior Center, 197 W. Park. Quilt winners show, antique displays, arts, crafts, jewelry, breads, jams, jellies and pies.

Noon to 4 p.m.: Free wildlife films. Kenai National Wildlife Refuge on Ski Hill Road.

Noon "until done": Thrills Unlimited presents the Ejector Seat in the Peninsula Center Mall parking lot.

1 to 4 p.m.: Flight-seeing trips. Natron Air is offering 15-minute flight-seeing trips over Soldotna for $20. Just show up at the Natron Air hangar at the Soldotna Airport and see Tim Pope.

Saturday, July 22

9 a.m.: Parade lineup on Aspen Street. You must have a parade application to participate; it is free. For information, call the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce at 262-9814.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Arts and crafts bazaar, quilt show, antique display and bake sale. Soldotna Senior Center, 197 W. Park. Quilt winners show, antique displays, arts, crafts, jewelry, breads, jams, jellies and pies.

11 a.m.: Parade starts. (See page 7 for more information.)

11 a.m. to 7 p.m.: Live entertainment and vendors at the Peninsula Center Mall indoors and in the parking lot east of Safeway. Entertainment will include the farmers' market, the Top Cover U.S. Air Force Band from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. and from 2:15 to 3 p.m.; Don the Magician from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m., "Xtreme Racing" remote-control car event and more.

Noon to 1:30 p.m.: Race car rides with the Alaska Sports Car Club at the track at the east end of the Soldotna airport for those 18 or older. Ride a race car on the track at "non-race speed." Donation of $10 requested; all proceeds benefit Funny River Emergency Services. For more information, call Rich Hearin at 262-6234.

Noon to 4 p.m.: Soldotna Area Senior Center Endowment Fund barbecue at the senior center parking lot at 197 W. Park. Proceeds benefit the seniors' programs.

Noon to 4 p.m.: Free wildlife films. Kenai National Wildlife Refuge on Ski Hill Road.

Noon "until done": Thrills Unlimited presents the Ejector Seat in the Peninsula Center Mall parking lot.

1 p.m.: Wiener dog race. Dach-shunds are invited to stretch their legs next to the children's games at the Peninsula Center Mall. To sign your dachshund up for the parade or race, contact Diane at 262-1827.

1 to 6 p.m.: Family Fun Rodeo at the Soldotna Rodeo Grounds on Kalifornsky Beach Road, featuring children's games, barrel racing, junior bull riding and more, plus vendor booths. Admission is $3 for all ages and $10 for a family pass. For more information, call Paula Lovett at 283-7674.

1:30 to 3 p.m.: Bridges Children's Spectacular at the Peninsula Center Mall sponsored by Bridges Community Resource Network, including races, contests and prizes. For more information call Bridges at 260-3800.

2 to 4 p.m.: VFW Progress Days Barbecue, open house and chicken sh*t contest at the VFW on Birch Street. The food is free. For information, call Sue Singleton at 262-2722.

7 p.m.: Peninsula Promenaders Square Dance with mainstream dancing at the North Star Dance Studio at Mile 88.3 Sterling Highway. Instruction for beginners starts at 7 p.m. and costs $3. The main dance begins at 8 p.m. Cover charge is $4 apiece. For more information, call Betty at 262-9387 or Dudley at 260-2691.

8 p.m. to midnight: Rodeo dance with live music at the rodeo grounds off Kalifornsky Beach Road. Cover charge is $5.

Sunday, July 23

2 p.m.: Tsalteshi Trail Challenge: A 15-kilometer or 7.5-kilometer walk/run. Proceeds will go to maintenance of the trail system. Register by mail or from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the starting point behind Skyview High School. (See page 10 for more information.)
