Advocates for Catholic women celebrate Mary Magdalene

CLEVELAND (AP) -- FutureChurch, an organization advocating women in the Roman Catholic priesthood, is among groups organizing prayer services in dozens of U.S. cities Saturday to honor St. Mary Magdalene on her feast day.

This is the third year of such celebrations, which are also held in Canada and Britain.

Sister Christine Schenk, FutureChurch's executive director, says that ''learning about Jesus' remarkable inclusion of women despite strong cultural prohibitions of the time can inspire all of us to redouble our efforts to end the systematic inequality of women in the church.''
