Summer Institute was true learning experience

Posted: Thursday, July 21, 2005

It is with great pleasure that I can congratulate the Summer Institute Two participants and their families for their dedication to completing their Summer Institute experience. Forty-eight students attended the institute at the Kachemak Bay Campus of Kenai Peninsula College. These students spent over eight hours a day for two weeks attending classes at the college, strengthening their math and critical thinking skills, preparing for the SAT tests and learning how to be better students. Many of these students commuted on the bus over one hour to get to the institute.

I also would like to thank our sponsors and staff — who were listed in an ad in the July 5 Clarion — for their involvement and support. These sponsors, staff and business partners helped make this a successful event.

Special thanks go to Lori Garrison, Project GRAD's scholarship coordinator who worked tirelessly on planning and supervision the activities of the institute.

Finally, I would like to extend a special thank you to Carol Swartz, director of Kachemak Bay Campus of Kenai Peninsula College and Gary Turner, KPC director. Your support and commitment to education on the peninsula are remarkable. Without your support and leadership, we would not have been able to have this experience for our youth.

Thanks again.

Heather Pancratz, Executive director, Project GRAD Kenai Peninsula
