Former Soldotna resident Jennifer (Jen) C. Larned died Wednesday June 23, 2010, at her home in Huntington Station, N.Y,. surrounded by several family members, after a 12-year battle with breast cancer. She was 40.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 30, at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Museum in Huntington Station.
Ms. Larned was born Feb. 23, 1970, in Daytona Beach, Fla. During her childhood she lived in Connecticut, California, Hawaii, Florida, and Alaska. She was a 1988 graduate of Soldotna High School. She earned a BS in Telecommunications from the University of Idaho, and worked as a TV technician in Spokane, Wash., Great Falls, Mont., and Anchorage. In 1996 she moved to New York City, where she eventually became technical director and editor for WPIX channel 11, earning Emmy awards and recognition as Employee of the Year. In 2005 she married Norman Bluth of Bethpage, N.Y. The couple settled in Huntington Station and in 2007 had a son, Benjamin Bluth.
"Throughout her life, Jen worked hard to establish and maintain strong, lasting relationships with family and friends, and valued them above all else. Her adventurous and competitive spirit led her to hunting, fishing, backpacking, skydiving, scuba diving, skiing, as well as swimming and triathlon competition with her husband and friends. The time spent with her son and husband during a period of partial remission of her illness brought some of the greatest joy of her life," her family said.
Ms. Larned was preceded in death by her mother, Bonnie Fogarty.
She is survived by her son, Benjamin Bluth; husband, Norman Bluth; father, William Larned; stepmother, Susan Larned; sisters, Archer and Allson Larned, of Soldotna, sisters, Megan and Lauren Abubo of Honolulu; step-brothers, Derek Beach of Arhus, Denmark, and Bryan Doran of Washington, D.C.; and grandparents, William and Jane Bisson, of Clearwater, Fla.
