Water laboratory to open in Homer
Cook Inlet Keeper will hold a grand opening and dedication of the new community-based water quality laboratory from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Kachemak Bay Conservation Center at 3734 Ben Walters Lane in Homer. Community members are asked to bring a potluck dish to share. Participants will tour the new lab and have an opportunity to express their opinions on the future of water monitoring and research in Cook Inlet. Childbirth, Safe Sitter course offered
Central Peninsula General Hospital will offer childbirth classes from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $75 and must be paid in advance.
A six-week session on childbirth will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday beginning Aug. 4. The cost is $75 and also must be paid in advance. For more information or to register for either class, call 714-4788.

Church to hold flea market fund-raiser
The Apostolic Assembly of Jesus Christ will hold a flea market fund-raiser from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Soldotna Medical Center parking lot at 265 Binkley St. in Soldotna. Library plans book sale
The Soldotna Public Library will hold its annual Progress Days used book sale from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the library.
A preview of the sale will be from noon to 4 p.m. Friday. The cost is $10 for any interested community members to have an opportunity to purchase books before the sale Saturday. Coupon books for the sale will be handed out during the Progress Days parade. For more information, call 262-4227.
Gospel quartet to perform
Liberty, a southern gospel quartet, will perform at 11 a.m. Sunday at Peninsula Grace Brethren Church. There is no admission fee. An offering will be taken in support of its ministry. For more information, call 262-6442.
WRCC to host annual run
The Women's Resource and Crisis Center will hold its 17th annual Kenai Peninsula 5- and 10-kilometer Run For Women at 10 a.m. Aug. 14 in Kenai. Registration deadlines are, mail in Aug. 6, in-person Aug. 13, and day of race at 9 a.m. Cost is $15 or $20 for day of race.
Preregistered racers can pick up their bib, tee shirts and promotional items from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 13 at the lower level of the Seaman Building entrance at 601 Frontage Road in Kenai.
