Oilers edge Miners in 12th

Posted: Wednesday, July 22, 2009

Mat-Su hurler David Stilley's nine impressive innings went for naught as the Peninsula Oilers scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the 12th and held on for a 2-1 win over the Miners on Tuesday night in Alaska Baseball League action at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

The second win in three days over Mat-Su vaults the Oilers to 13-20 on the ABL season and brings them within seven games of the league-leading Miners, who are now 21-14.

Stilley allowed just one unearned run on three hits, all singles and none after the fifth, and three walks with six strikeouts.

It didn't matter, though.

Following two scoreless innings of relief by Mat-Su closer Estevan Uriegas, Jeremy Atkins couldn't make it three in a row.

Glen Johnson singled to begin the 12th and took second on a sacrifice bunt.

After intentionally walking Caleb Bushyhead, Atkins surrendered a single to Garry Kuykendall that plated Johnson all the way from second with the eventual game-winner for the Oilers, who earlier this season captured a 2-0, 11-inning win in the Valley.

Peninsula closer Josh Corrales put two runners on with two outs in the 12th, but finished it off by striking out Jonathan Johnson looking.

Oilers starter Kevin Rath turned in another strong outing himself, allowing just one unearned run on four hits and three walks in six innings. He struck out five and stranded seven runners.

Reliever Mike Ratigan came on and picked up two quick outs in the seventh before walking James Ramsey and hitting Shane Brown with a pitch.

With an assist from right-fielder Chris Ellison, however, he wiggled his way out of the precarious situation.

Ross Blondin stroked a single to right, but Ellison, who's shown his strong arm on multiple occasions this season, gunned down Ramsey at home as he was trying to score in preserving the 1-1 tie.

Ratigan later surrendered a two-out, pinch-hit double to Jonathan Cisneros in the eighth before inducing a ground-out in walking off unharmed.

Stilley, still going strong, walked Ellison to open the ninth, but finished off his would-be gem with a fielder's choice and two ground-outs in providing his team an opportunity at victory.

The Miners nearly took it, too.

David Brown -- who tossed three innings of scoreless relief -- hit Scott Arthur with one out in the ninth and the league-leader in stolen bases promptly swiped second before Brown walked Ramsey.

Both runners advanced on a wild pitch.

After striking out Shane Brown and intentionally walking Blondin to load the bases, David Brown struck out Nick Cox in stranding three more Miners and sending the game to extras.

The Oilers took the lead in the third when Dearth Parker singled, moved to third on an error and scored on a single by Kuykendall.

Rath hit some trouble in the fourth when Brown led off with a double and took third on an error.

Following a strikeout by Blondin, Cox singled home Brown before Rath escaped with just the one unearned run.

The Oilers, who have only 12 games remaining this season, continue their 10-game road trip today in Fairbanks at 7 p.m. in the first of a five-game series against the Goldpanners.
