The American Legion Post 20 Twins baseball team led off the District II tournament with a win Saturday, defeating Tri-Cities of Fairbanks 3-2 at Arco Fields in Fairbanks.
After surrendering a run to Tri-Cities in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Twins picked up three runs in the top of the sixth inning -- a huge lead in a tournament where all the games on day one were one-run affairs.
Paul John Zobeck led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Zobeck scored on a double by Mike Sauer, the only extra-base hit of the ballgame.
Shaun Williams drew a one-out base on balls and Josh Edmondson beat out a bunt for a single to load the bases.
Willie Castillo came to the plate with two outs and the bases still full of Twins and with the count full, stung a ball to the right of the Tri-Cities shortstop.
The infielder was able to dive to knock the ball down, but with the runners moving on the pitch, both Sauer and Williams were able to cross the plate before he could make a play.
Danny Bookey earned the win for the Twins with an eight-inning effort, striking out seven and retiring the side in order in the third and sixth innings.
Severin Gardner pitched the ninth for the save, striking out three of the four batters he faced.
Zobeck was 3-for-5 for the game while Castillo and Sauer were each 2-for-5.
The Twins had a bye through the first round of play and with the win they advance in the winners' bracket to face Wasilla today at 2 p.m.
Tri-Cities had advanced to its matchup with the Twins by virtue of an 8-7 win over the South Peninsula Storm in the first round.
