Progress Days 2001 Schedule of Events

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Arts and crafts bazaar, quilt show, antique display and bake sale. Soldotna Senior Center, 197 W. Park. Quilt winners show, antique displays, arts, crafts, jewelry, breads, jams, jellies and pies (limited menu also available).

noon to 4 p.m.: Free wildlife films. Kenai National Wildlife Refuge on Ski Hill Road.

1 to 4 p.m.: Flightseeing trips. Natron Air is offering 15-minute flightseeing trips over Soldotna for $20 at the Natron Air hangar at the Soldotna airport.

6 p.m.: Magic show presented by Don the Magician and the After the Bell Kids at Soldotna High School. Call Tammy for more information at 262-4344. There is a $2 suggested donation.

Saturday, July 28

7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: Central Peninsula Air Fair at Kenai Municipal, McGahan Industrial, Quartz Creek, Kasilof, Ninilchik, Homer and Soldotna airports. Barbecue, camping, fishing and touring. Displays of interesting aircraft and educational activities. For more information, call Mike Tarr or Stan Gerlitz at 283-3537.

9 a.m.: Parade lineup on Aspen Street. You must have a parade application to participate; it is free. For information, call the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce at 262-9814.

11 a.m.: Parade starts.

11 a.m. to 7 p.m.: Live entertainment and vendors on West Park Avenue. Entertainment will include the Elmendorf Air Force Band (Greatlanders) from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. and 1:30 to 2:15 p.m.; Don the Magician from 2:15 p.m. to 3 p.m., Broadway Kids from 3 to 4 p.m. and dachshund dog races.

12:30 p.m.: Progress Days Car and Bike Show on West Park Avenue. Hosted by Kenai Peninsula Racing Lions, Peninsula Classic Auto Club, Twin Cities Raceway and Kenai Peninsula Harley Davidson and Buells.

Noon to 4 p.m.: Soldotna Area Senior Center Endowment Fund barbecue at the senior center parking lot at 197 W. Park. Proceeds benefit the seniors' programs.

Noon to 4 p.m.: Free wildlife films. Kenai National Wildlife Refuge on Ski Hill Road.

1 to 6 p.m.: Family Fun Rodeo at the Soldotna rodeo grounds on Kalifornsky Beach Road, featuring children's games, barrel racing and junior bull riding, plus vendor booths. For more information, call the Soldotna Equestrian Association at 262-7006 or Vicki at 260-6982.

1:30 to 3 p.m.: Bridges Children's Spectacular on West Park Avenue sponsored by Bridges Community Resource Network Inc., including races, contests and prizes. For more information, call Bridges at 260-3800.

1:30 to 5:30 p.m.: Annual Used Book Sale at Soldotna Public Library. Look for coupons distributed during the parade. For more information, call 262-4227.

2 to 4 p.m.: VFW Progress Days Barbecue, open house and chicken sh*t contest at the VFW on Birch Street. For information, call Sue Singleton at 262-2722.

5:30 p.m.: Plane dedication at Soldotna airport. Come celebrate and remember the early aviators on the Kenai Peninsula.

7 p.m.: Heritage Place fund-raising auction to help buy a new van. It will take place at Heritage Place in Soldotna. Free dessert.

7 p.m.: Peninsula Promenaders Square Dance with mainstream dancing at the North Star Dance Studio at Mile 88.3 Sterling Highway. For more information, call Betty at 262-9387 or Dudley at 260-2691.

Sunday, July 29

Noon to 5 p.m.: Free wildlife films. Kenai National Wildlife Refuge on Ski Hill Road.

1 to 6 p.m.: Sixth annual Soldotna Creek Park picnic. Presented by the city of Soldotna and the Kenai Watershed Forum. Free hot dogs and sodas and fun and games.
