Troopers credit bike helmet with saving cyclist

Posted: Monday, July 23, 2001

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A helmet may have saved the life of a Fairbanks bicyclist who crashed Sunday.

Alaska State Troopers said Dave Leonard, 47, was riding with a group of cyclists at 2 p.m. when he lost control of his bicycle and crashed at Mile 317 Parks Highway.

Leonard suffered possible broken ribs, a broken hip and cuts and bruises over his entire body, including his head.

Troopers said the crash easily could have been fatal if Leonard had not been wearing a helmet.

Leonard did not suffer head injuries. The helmet was heavily damaged.
