FAIRBANKS (AP) -- The University of Alaska Fairbanks has named Phyllis Morrow to be interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts, the university announced Monday.

Morrow replaces Dean John Leipzig who is leaving to accept a position as chancellor at the St. Thomas campus of the University of the Virgin Islands. Leipzig was named dean in 2000 and had served as interim dean since 1998.

Morrow earned her bachelor's degree from Harvard in 1972. She received her master's and doctorate from Cornell University in 1976. She has been with UAF since 1978, and has served as the director of the Yup'ik Eskimo Language Center at the Kuskokwim Community College.

Morrow has also chaired the anthropology department and served as the division head in the College of Liberal Arts' Languages and Cultures Division.

With more than 1,000 students, the College of Liberal Arts is the largest college on the UAF campus.
