Outdoor Club combines nature, health, friendship and fitness

As the call goes out across the Country for Americans to shape up, health clubs and gyms are offering new ideas and programs that encourage people of all ages to become physically fit. Here on the Kenai Peninsula, Healthy Changes on K-Beach Rd. is offering an outdoor club for folks who don't want to be inside a gym during Alaska's long summer days.

"There are so many people that live in the community that are by themselves in the summer for whatever reason, and they don't want to hike on their own. Perhaps they don't know how to get to the destinations, or are concerned about bears or conditions that are not as safe when you are out alone," said Sandra Milstein, creator and coordinator for the Outdoor Club at Healthy Changes. Milstein came to Alaska 8 years ago and worked for a lodge as a hiking and kayaking guide, "It's a great chance to get to know the area, so when I started working at Healthy Changes a few years ago, I put together the Outdoor Club as a basis to get people together and experience the fantastic country that surrounds us," said Milstein.

Outdoors Club member Carla Anderson takes a break and enjoys the view along the Pt. Hope trail.

The Outdoor Club has had several day as well as overnight hikes around the area and the activities are attracting more participants each time. "People are amazed at what is in their own backyard. There are so many awesome destinations within just a short 30-minute drive, and when you take folks out of an indoor setting there seems to be a special bond and friendship that develops along the way," added Milstein. The Healthy Changes Outdoor Club has a schedule of activities through September, for details call 262-6197.
