Search suspended for missing fisherman near Yakutat

Posted: Wednesday, July 23, 2003

JUNEAU (AP) A search has been suspended for a fisherman missing near Yakutat. The man's name has not been released.

The Coast Guard was notified at about 10 p.m. Monday that two skiffs were fishing in the mouth of the Awke River and one overturned in the surf.

The skiff's operator disappeared.

Searchers looked for the man Monday night and Tuesday morning.

The search area was about 34 miles south of Yakutat.

Coast Guard spokesman Rob Childress said nothing was found other than debris that could be correlated to a capsized vessel. He said that included a gas can and a sheen.

Yakutat is about 225 miles northwest of Juneau.
