Although it is still July, I noticed, much to my daughter's chagrin, that the back-to-school displays have begun to pop up at the local stores. Although the end of August seems to be a long way in the future, here are a few early bits of information to help you prepare.

For those of you with students attending Sterling Elementary School, Principal, Christine Ermold wanted to remind you that classroom lists will be available at the beginning of August. You will be able to drop by the school and find your child's classroom assignment posted in the front windows.

This year, to help parents take advantage of those early sale prices for school supplies, the basic supply list for the primary and intermediate wings of Sterling Elementary School are available online at

Connie Ferguson, our local Sterling Raven AmeriCORPS Member, wanted to pass on the reminder that even though the school is closed for the summer, aluminum can recycling is ongoing. You may drop off your cans in the recycle bin in the side parking lot at the elementary school.

Happy birthday wishes go out today, July 23 to Kathy Fontenot; Tomi Poss, Dean Hill and Shirley Dawson will celebrate July 26; Dennis Poss on July 28; and Beverly Looney on July 29.

You may have noticed the building project going on at the Sterling Senior Center. Building B, Phase 2 of Sterling Moose River Manor is progressing on schedule with electrical and plumbing work going on now. Prospective tenants wishing to apply should contact the director, Judy Warren, to be added to the list.

The senior center will host the following events this week; Today: exercise at 10 a.m.; Tuesday: Crafty Quilters at 9 a.m. and fun crafts at 10 a.m.; Wednesday: exercise and board of directors work session at 10 a.m., and Jubilee Baptist Church at 7 p.m.; Thursday: Crafty Quilters at 9 a.m., fun crafts at 10 a.m. and card players at 6 p.m.; Friday: exercise at 10 a.m. and choir at 1 p.m.; Saturday: Kenai Keys meeting at 11 a.m.

It seems that my incoming news bag has been rather empty this week. I assume all you Sterlingites are out enjoying the long summer days fishing or gardening. Maybe you are practicing that always enjoyable summertime hobby of motor home dodging.

Whatever you are doing, I want to remind you if you don't send me the news, I can't print it. If you have a club meeting, birthday wish or community event you would like to see printed in the paper, send me an e-mail.

Send me updates on your soldier, new graduate news, who's leaving for college and where they are going. Have your kids earned awards, badges or trophies? These are things to brag about!

Please remember, news needs to be in to me by Wednesday night to be printed in the following week's paper.
