Nikiski Community News

I hope you are enjoying the long summer days. I want to thank many of you for submitting announcements and Nikiski information.

The Nikiski Senior Citizens Center will offer blood pressure checks at 11:30 today.

Upward Soccer Camp will be held today through Friday at the Lighthouse Community fields from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The camp is for kids in first through sixth grade. Lunch is provided.

Teen night will be held Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. at North Peninsula Recreation Center. The event is for teens 13 to 18 and the cost is $2 per person. There will be pool, foosball, dodge ball, gym time and video games played on a Nintendo Wii. For more information, call Tammy at 776-8800.

The Lighthouse Christian Church will hold a basketball and cheerleading camp July 30 through Aug. 3 at Nikiski High School from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

The Cosmic Reading Challenge program will be held through Sept. 1 for Nikiski North Star Elementary students. The program encourages summer reading. Younger children are encouraged to read 100 books while upper-grades are encouraged to keep a tally of the number of minutes they spend reading, with a goal of 1,000 minutes. Students can pick up a tally form at the library and participants will receive a free shirt and other prizes.

For those interested, class lists for Nikiski North Star Elementary will be posted Aug. 17 at the school. School supplies will be available to purchase from the parent teacher association Aug. 20 and the first day of school will be Aug. 22 for first through sixth grade.

Debbie and Jim Mullins recently attended commencement exercises at Brigham Young University in Rexburg, Idaho to watch their son receive his diploma. Jason was one of nearly 800 students graduating in July, received his bachelor's degree in finance and banking. Jason is a former Nikiski High School graduate. The Mullinses plan to get in some quality time with Jason's three daughters.

The following names were drawn at the Nikiski senior center as free lunch winners: Nancy Delene, Marvin McPherson, Diana Summers, Robert Spillane, Anna May Miller, June Bethje and Jim Evenson. To enter, patrons should sign their lunch ticket and names are drawn Fridays after lunch.

Dylan Broussard celebrated his 10th birthday July 17. His family wanted to wish him a wonderful belated birthday and a great year ahead.

"We are all so very proud of him," his grandmother, Carole Broussard, said.

Happy birthday wishes go to Loretta Moore today, July 23; Don Simon on July 26; Bailey Buchholz on July 28; and Bert Wilson on July 29.

Happy anniversary wishes go to Charles and Louise Tulin on July 24; and Tom and Shelly Buchholz on July 28.
