Soldotna man graduates basic training

Air Force Airman Michael D. Miller, a 1999 graduate of Soldotna High School, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

During the six weeks of training, Miller studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community

College of the Air Force.

Miller is the son of David R. Miller, of Soldotna, and Genita D. Thirwell, of Nikiski.

Legion names woman of the year

Amy Garroutte was named the Department of Alaska "Woman of the Year" by the American Legion Auxiliary Ninilchik Unit during the American Legion Department Convention held in Sitka in May.

Garroutte has been a member of the Legion 10 years and currently is serving as chaplain, sunshine gal and organizer for many functions for the American Legion and the Ninilchik community.
