FAIRBANKS (AP) -- An Anchorage company has been awarded a $9.6 million contract to clean up an old military site on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea.

Bristol Environmental & Engineering Services Corp. will clean up the site at Northeast Cape.

The Air Force and Navy operated a base and a radar communications site at the island in the Bering Sea from the 1950s through the 1970s.

The military left behind thousands of barrels of waste as well as buildings on Northeast Cape.

The Defense Department says Bristol will remove above-ground fuel tanks, septic systems, asbestos and other hazardous waste. The work is expected to be completed by July 2005.
