Oilers battle Goldpanners in doubleheader

Posted: Thursday, July 24, 2003

The Peninsula Oilers dropped the opening game of a doubleheader 4-0 to the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks Wednesday at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks.

Game two of the doubleheader was still in progress as the Clarion went to press.

The Oilers were up early before the Goldpanners came back in the late innings, tying the game in the bottom of the ninth to send it to extra innings.

Paul Coleman took the loss for the Oilers in the first game, giving up four runs on six hits while striking out seven. Coleman did not issue a walk, though he was tagged for a home run.

Clay Johnson earned the win for the Alaska Baseball League-leading Goldpanners, limiting the Oilers to five hits in the seven-inning game, walking one and striking out eight.

The Oilers led 5-1 after six innings in game two, getting a two-run homer from Dusty Bensko in the fourth inning.

Oilers starter Tim Gorski went 6 1-3 innings, allowing 12 hits but only giving up two runs. Gorski did not issue a walk and struck out three.

The Oilers, 16-14 in league play after game one Wednesday, are still in the hunt for one of the two league berths in the National Baseball Congress World Series.

Entering the second game, the Oilers were three games behind the Goldpanners, tied with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots for second place in the standings and a half game ahead of the Athletes in Action Fire.

The Oilers wrap up their regular season with a four-games series against the Fire starting tonight.
