Soldotna resident Larry Dean Gillum died Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at his home with his wife by his side. He was 65.
There will be no formal services held, per his request.
Mr. Gillum was born Oct. 18, 1943, to Vernon and Edith Gillum in Fort Wayne, Ind. He moved to Alaska in April 2005 with his family. Mr. Gillum was employed for the US West in Portland, Ore., from 1970-90 and for the Lincoln County School District in Toledo, Ore., from 2003-05.
He loved fishing, hunting, and wood working.
"Larry was an avid hunter, fisher and outdoorsman who loved just being out in the woods or on the water with a fishing pole in his hand. In 2005 he and his wife moved to Alaska to fulfill his dream of living in Alaska. He was courageously fighting cancer for the second time in his life when he died," his family said. "Larry was a master craftsman who enjoyed wood carving and loved spending time in his shop working on wood projects. He was one of those talented people who could make, build or fix anything. Larry was a kind and generous man who will be deeply missed by his family and friends."
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Eva Gillum of Soldotna; and his daughter, Dori Dawson of Portland, Ore.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Larry to the Central Peninsula Hospital, 250 Hospital Place. Soldotna, Alaska 99669. Attn: Kathy Lopeman.
