Former Nikiski resident Charles L. "Lindy" Hammond died Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at home in Palmer. He was 81.
Services will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 26, at Weldin Construction Building, 561 E. Steel Loop, Palmer.
Mr. Hammond was born Dec. 29, 1927, in Sherman, Texas, to Charles and Lillian Hammond. He graduated from Sunset High School and attended college in Dallas.
He married Jane Hammond on Dec. 20, 1953, at the Presbyterian Church in Anchorage. Mr. Hammond worked as a power plant operator. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1946.
"Lindy was a fan of all things to do with sports, but his favorite was basketball and his San Antonio Spurs. He was an avid golfer in his retirement. He dearly loved his many friends in Texas and Alaska, and he and Jane are known for their hospitality and graciousness," his family said. "Lindy had a terrific sense of humor, which remained with him until the end. He loved to argue politics (or anything for that matter) with anyone who dared to take him on. He also thoroughly enjoyed good food and dining and both he and Jane became accomplished home cooks.
Mr. Hammond was proceeded in death by his sister, June Waldorf.
He is survived by his wife of Palmer; children, Jennie Weldin and her husband, Dick of Palmer, Laura Edwards and Jim Farrar of Anchorage, and Dan and Jennie Hammond of Nikiski; grandchildren, Adrienne Edwards of Bend, Ore., Mitch Laird of Anchorage, Stephanie Elhard and her husband, Bart, of Seward, and Brandy and Brianna Hammond of Nikiski; great-grandchild, Torryn Tibbetts, of Bend; brother, Joe Hammond and his wife, Theresa, of San Antonio; sister, Lois Hoehn of St. Louis, Mo.; and brother-in-law, Skipper Waldorf of Prescott, Ariz.; three nieces; and one nephew.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimers Resource Agency of Alaska, P.O. Box 4406, Palmer, AK 99645.
