Former Soldotna resident Charles C. Foster died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, peacefully at his home in Lakeside, Calif., with his family by his side. He was 90.
Mr. Foster was born Oct. 6, 1918, to Clarence H. and Ellis Settle Foster in Lakeside. He graduated from Grossmont High School in 1939 and served in the U.S. Army from 1941-45, fighting in World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of first Lieutenant.
"After the war, adventure took him north to Alaska," his family said.
He started a heavy equipment construction business which he worked for 30 years. He briefly returned to Lakeside to marry Ruth Gates in 1956. The couple moved their family to Alaska, where they raised four sons on their homestead off Forest Lane in Soldotna. After he retired, the couple moved to Arkansas, where they settled on a ranch.
"The adventurous and hard-working couple then returned to Lakeside in the 1980s and turned 40 barren acres into a beautiful home and shady estate," his family said.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Gary (Kathleen), Jeff (Kathy), Jack (Carey) and Steve (Becky); 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Coke (Ruth), Bill (Jean) and Don (Lucille).
