ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The state Department of Fish and Game will close a popular dipnet fishery in the Matanuska Valley for several days this week, and perhaps longer.
The Fish Creek dipnet fishery in Wasilla will be closed from 11 a.m Wednesday through next Monday because too few red salmon have passed through on their way to the spawning grounds.
Fishery managers with the state Department of Fish and Game said only 14,000 reds have been counted at the Fish Creek weir. By now some 22,000 reds should have made it upriver to reach the department's spawning goal of 50,000 fish.
Fish and Game officials said the dipnet fishery could be reopened if the run gains strength.
