Fire forces doctor's practice to move

Because of a recent fire, Dr. Ted Barton and Rachel Record, CNM, have temporarily moved their practice to the Peninsula Medical Center in Soldotna. The phone number will remain the same, 262-2602. Because office equipment was destroyed, records of appointments are not available to the office. Patients with upcoming appointments are asked to call and confirm with the office.

Summer beautification judging planned

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce will hold the 2000 summer beautification judging Friday. Winners in residential and commercial categories will receive a special plant donated by Booth's Landscaping. If you would like to enter your garden in this event, call the chamber at 262-9814.

Grant money available for recreational trails

More than $500,000 is available to organizations and agencies for development and maintenance of recreational trails and for safety and education programs relating to recreational trail use in Alaska. The Recreational Trails Program grant administrator for Alaska will be in Soldotna on Wednesday to explain how the grant program works and to teach prospective applicants how to write a competitive application. The workshop is at 5 p.m. in conference room of the Borough Building at 144 N. Binkley.

Another workshop will be held in Anchor Point on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Anchor Point Visitors Center at School Street and the Old Sterling Highway.

Theatre to hold weekend youth workshop

Pier One Youth Theatre will hold its annual skills camp extravaganza, titled "Les Vaches sont on Feu." The workshop includes dance, drama, comedy, mime, song and monologues. It will be held Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. with a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets are $6 for general admission. Lose weight with TOPS

Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) members routinely lose 10 to 50 pounds, even 100. There will be an open house Friday from 11 a.m. to noon at the Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna for those interested in learning more about the program. For more information, call Margaret at 262-6329.

Soldotna church to hold Bible school

Holy Word Studios will present a vacation Bible school program at Soldotna Church of the Nazarene from Monday to Aug. 4, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. Children from preschool to grade six may participate. The program will feature crafts, games and Bible drama with the theme "Where Kids Star in God's Story." For more information, call 260-3168.

Dog agility fun match planned

The Peninsula Dog Obedience Group will hold a dog agility fun match Aug. 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the hockey rink behind the Soldotna Sports Center. It is open to those who have taken some level of agility classes. There is a $5 fee to participate. Spectators are encouraged to come see what agility is about. Caution advised when making donations

The Kenai Police Department reminds residents to use caution when making donations to charitable organizations. Those not familiar with an organization or who have questions about any organization's nonprofit status should call (907) 465-2530. All 501(c)(3) organizations are incorporated and must be registered with the state of Alaska. All other charitable organizations soliciting donations within Alaska must be registered with the state of Alaska Department of Law. To determine if an organization is registered as a charitable organization, call the Department of Law at (907) 269-5200 and ask for the civil division charitable organization registry.
