Search scaled back for missing man

Posted: Friday, July 25, 2003

ANCHORAGE (AP) The search for a man believed to have fallen into a swift-running Creek on Monday continued Thursday but was scaled back, Alaska State Troopers said.

Seward artist Leetus George, 61, is believed to have fallen into Sixmile Creek near Hope. He fell in while crossing the creek Monday evening.

George has a mining claim along Sixmile near Mile 5 of the Hope Highway. His son said his father had gone out to stake a claim and move some gear across the river.

Searchers found George's backpack, rifle, clothing and other gear piled on both banks of the river, said trooper William Welch.

Troopers conducted a full-blown search on Tuesday of Sixmile and the Turnagain Arm, where the waterway empties. A couple of hours of searching from the air were planned for Thursday and Friday, said trooper spokesman Tim DeSpain.

Chugach Outdoor Center guides also will keep a lookout when they're on the river.
