Redford, Botelho take titles

Posted: Sunday, July 25, 2004

Mo Redford and Rita Botelho have been able to devote a lot of time to playing golf lately, and it showed Thursday and Friday in the 13th annual Grainge Memorial Senior Golf Tournament at Birch Ridge.

Redford, playing in the Masters Division for those over 60, fired a two-day total of 158 to win the Masters Championship Flight by seven strokes over Dale Sandahl. Redford's total was even two strokes better than that of Gordon Griffin, who won the Junior-Senior Championship Flight, which is for golfers between 50 and 60 years of age.

Botelho cruised to the title in the Ladies Division, totaling 167 strokes to defeat runner-up Chiya Bazan by 20 strokes.

The title was the second in three years for Redford at the senior tournament, which currently is the largest medal play tournament on the Kenai Peninsula. Last year, Redford took second place to Sandahl.

"I was really pleased," Redford said. "It was a good two days of golf. I'm playing the best golf of my life right now."

Redford said he has been able to devote more time to golf since retiring three years ago. His handicap is all the way down to 10 and he would like to get it down to eight by next year.

"I'm not as young and wild as I used to be," Redford said. "I can't get into as much trouble anymore on the golf course."

Botelho also has had a lot of time to devote to the game this summer. As of Friday, she said she hadn't touched her canoe and dipnet yet this summer.

An employee at Kenai Golf Course, Botelho spends most of her time playing there. Birch Ridge also holds a special spot in her heart, though.

"I love Birch Ridge," Botelho said. "It's where I learned to play golf. Birch Ridge remembers me and still loves me."

It took at least one hole for Botelho and the golf course to renew acquaintances. Birch Ridge owner Pat Cowan said the course is in the best shape of its life. Particularly nice are the greens, which are playing a lot faster than those at Kenai.

Botelho didn't get on a practice green at Birch Ridge before her first round Thursday, so she ended up four-putting the first hole. However, the only other serious mistake she made was a triple bogey on No. 17 Friday.

Other winners for the men were Cowan taking the Masters Championship low net, Brad Jordan taking the Masters First Flight low gross, Chuck Rider taking the Masters First Flight low net, Richard Gallaway taking the Masters Second Flight low gross, Gary Effenbeck taking the Masters Second Flight low net, Craig Jung taking the Junior-Senior Championship low net, Steve Dexheimer taking the Junior-Senior First Flight low gross and Bob Bush taking the Junior-Senior First Flight low net.

For the women, Jo Briscoe took low net while Bazan was second in the low net standings.

Jesse Wade, who is over 60 but still chooses to play in the Junior-Senior Division, had the low round of 77 at the tournament. Wade fired the score Thursday.
