Regatta keeps on growing

With 45 rowers participating, the Head of the Kenai Regatta, hosted by the Kenai Crewsers, had its best turnout ever Saturday at Kenai Lake.

Vickie Tinker, the president of the Kenai Crewsers, said the rowing club has grown a lot in the past couple of years. The club currently has 32 members in Seward and 50 in Soldotna.

"I think last year we did a lot of marketing before our learn to row programs and got the word out that the team is here," Tinker said. "It's a pretty fun sport and it's good for a broad spectrum of fitness."

The Crewsers formed in 1997 and started the Head of the Kenai Regatta in 1999. They have tried to hold it every year since then, but it has been canceled a couple of times due to bad weather.

"The club has a rule that we don't row on Kenai Lake if there are whitecaps," Tinker said.

As usual, the Anchorage Rowing Association dominated the regatta, winning four of the five categories.

"They have a lot of ex-college rowers and they're quite competitive," said Terri Orr, who organized the regatta. "We always seem to be chasing their tails.

"We're getting closer and closer, though."

In the Novice 8 race, the Seward part of Kenai Crewsers registered the one victory for the peninsula. Novice 8 was done in a sweep boat, or boat where each rower has one oar.

Orr said the Crewsers should continue to get more competitive as the club matures. She said coaches that come up for the summer have helped the team with technique and competitive skills.

The Crewsers are not done competing this summer. They will go to the Moose Nugget Miler in Wasilla on Sept. 11. They also will go out of state for a regatta, but they have yet to choose which one.
