It is not too early to think about the Kenai Peninsula State Fair held in Ninilchik each August, and not too late to get involved or to enter any of its many categories.
The fair can be a time for neighbors to gather together, get caught up and admire a season's growth of veggies, livestock and children.
This year's fair will take place Aug. 19 to 21.
Laura McGinnis, fair manager, said she is getting all wound up about this year's theme, "Time to Unwind."
She also said she is happy to announce that the new ex-hibitors' guides are available and may be picked up at Cadre Feed, Kenai Fabric, Trinity
Greenhouse, Our Best Friends, the Cooperative Extension Office on Kalifornsky Beach Road and at the fair office in Ninilchik.
The fair's office hours are Monday and Wednesday from 1 to 5 p.m.
McGinnis said she is looking for sponsors and volunteers to help with the various events such as the River to River Run, the egg toss, round hauling, judging exhibits, helping as a clerk and helping with fireworks and the Kenai Peninsula Racing Pigs event.
Volunteers still are needed in many areas.
However, those who have stepped forward have been making good use of the extended summer sunlight and have put many hours into beautifying the fairgrounds.
4-H club members also have been working hard by applying new coats of paint to fairground buildings and transplanting flowers into new flower boxes.
They also hauled in new sand in for the stalls and arena, where livestock of many shapes and sizes will compete for best of show and 4-H'ers will have a chance to strut their stuff and share with the community what they learned.
Preregistration is required for all livestock, including open entry, 4-H and FFA to insure stall space. The preregistration deadline is Aug. 16.
The fair isn't just about four-legged fun it's also a time to show off arts, crafts and cooking skills.
Don't forget to start saving room for pie, barbeque and candy apples, as the fair will have a multitude of vendors to fulfill every family member's dinning wishes.
There is just about a category for any hobbiest to enter and I will bring more information about the fair in the coming weeks.
