Kenai resident Brendan James McGee died Friday, July 16, 2010 in Soldotna from a gunshot wound to the head. He was 22.

Mr. McGee was born Sept. 30, 1987 in Boston, Massachusetts. He received his GED and went to a year of Vo Tech School in Seward. Mr. McGee served in boot camp for nine months in the U.S. Army. He moved to Alaska in 1999, living in Kenai. Mr. McGee worked for Mykels Restaurant in Soldotna for two years as a cook. He most recently was employed as a website designer for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game from 2008 to 2009 while living in Anchorage. Mr. McGee loved drawing, art, computers, hiking and movies.
His family wrote, "He loved Christmas with his sister Sarah and brother Kevin. They both really looked up to him and he will be greatly missed by the entire family. Brendan enjoyed hiking on Skyline Trail with his friends. He came back to Alaska from Massachusetts after working for a restaurant in Holbrook, Mass.; he said there was more freedom in Alaska. You could have a campfire and play a guitar outside on the beach of while camping. He also liked the mountain scenery and the less crowded highways and traffic of the East. Chelsea, his little dog, was his constant companion for 15 years. Brendan's best friend, Tom Mason, will also miss him greatly. Brendan enjoyed working for the Forestry Services the summer of the Caribou Hills Fire. Upon graduating with a certificate from AVTEC courses in Seward he worked for the Department of Fish and Game on the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council as a programmer/analyst. One of the projects he worked on was the project for the 20th Anniversary of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Website. He found the work to be interesting and was very happy there."
Mr. McGee was preceded in death by his grandfather, Paul H. McGee; uncle, Robert McGee, and stepfather, Richard Whitaker.
He is survived by his mother, Carolyn A. McGee of Kenai; sister, Sarah Whitaker of Kenai; brother, Kevin McGee of Kenai; grandmother, Jean McGee of Cooper Landing; aunt, Diane D'Amore of Weymouth, Mass.; uncle, Jim D'Amore of Weymouth; cousins, Andrea and Katie Slomkowski of Weymouth; aunt, Clarie Winslow of Holbrook, Mass.; uncle, Scott Winslow of Holbrook; cousins, David and Susan Winslow and Lisa Babbin, all of Holbrook; uncle, Paul McGee of Foxboro, Mass.; aunt, Christine Ridder of Weymouth; cousins, Matt Ridder of Massachusetts, Steven Ridder of New Jersey, and Robert Ridder of Massachusetts.
